Wellness Wednesday: 6 Ways to Go Green

For many Americans, it’s become quite a hot topic as we are becoming more and more health conscious, while also wanting to help preserve the environment.

Those who Go Green do things such as grow their own food or use reusable bags at the grocery store.

How Else Can I Go Green?

However, there are also simpler measures you can take which I will explain. If you are curious as to how you can go about helping to save the environment while taking a healthier living stance and saving a few dollars, here are a few simple tips for you.

  1. Eat in Season

Try to choose fruits and vegetables in season because they’re fresher, taste their best, and generally are cheaper. Not sure which fruits and veggies are in season?

  1. Cook More at Home

Cooking at home has many benefits. My favorite is that it saves you from having to pay for eating out which can get to be very expensive, especially if you have a family.

You save on gas, and you control how your food is prepared and what ingredients you use, leaving the unnecessary high-fat, high-calorie things out.

  1. Say Good-bye to Pre-packaged Foods

Limit your intake of pre-packed foods which reduces the packaging waste.

Many pre-packed foods aren’t the best for you anyway because they’re loaded with a lot of extra things our bodies don’t need. So, eat fresh over anything with a wrapper, as often as you can.

  1. Don’t Waste Your Food

Reducing the food you have to throw out at home will save you money and will limit waste.

Start meal planning and cook the food you purchase. Also make sure your refrigerator and freezer are set at the proper temperatures and rotate your oldest food to the front or freeze and save it for another day.

  1. Grow at Home

Growing your food at home allows you to eat better because you are eating foods not pre-packed and you’ll also reduce packaging waste. Also, food naturally grown comes without added chemicals. So, give it a try!

  1. Aim to Have a Balanced Diet In the Right Amounts

For optimal health it’s important to eat from all five food groups (meats, grains, fruits, vegetables, and milk) but in the right amounts. If we all did this it would leave more for the planet, we’d save money, and be slimmer.

What About Organic?

Organic foods are trending because they don’t include pesticides or other chemicals.

The downside is organic food can be pricey. In the end, it’s all up to you and your food budget.

If organic foods are not within your means, non organic foods such as fruits and vegetables can provide the similar nutrients.

So, don’t be caught in the hype of an organic label because it doesn’t always mean the food is healthier.

How Green you choose to go is up to you. Start by making small changes and then begin to notice your health change swiftly for all the right reasons.
